A sailing boat or sailing ship moves forward because of the reaction to inertia of moving air on its sails. By adjusting the rigging, rudder and centre board, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails in order to change the direction and speed of a boat. The engine is a mere element of support, that is used mainly for manoeuvres in ports. Today most people enjoy sailing as a recreational activity. A sailing boat consists of several parts, among which are : 1 – main sail 2 - jib 3 - spinnaker 4 - hull 5 – centre board 6 - rudder 7 – skeg 8 - mast 9 – spreaders 10 – shrouds 11 - main sail sheet 12 - boom 13 - mast 14 – spinnaker pole 15 - backstay 16 - forestay 17 - vang. There are different categories of sailing vessels, such as: small sailing boats, generally less than 5-6 meters long, without cabin space and without engine, used for sailing competitions or short trips; and "boats with a keel", that is to say, boats that have a keel (or bulb) and that are equipped for longer trips and distances (with a cabin that includes cooking and sleeping space, bathrooms, etc.). Sailing boats can have one or more hulls. These multihulls can be further subdivided into catamarans (two hulls) and trimarans (three hulls).
